Kirby’s Junkyard Dawgs is a remake of Dooley’s Junkyard Dogs.
In 1975, “Johnny Bee” Mosses asked his friend, James Brown, to record Dooley’s Junkyard Dogs. According to Mosses, the first version of the song was written by former Georgia color analyst and Larry Munson sidekick “Happy” Howard Williamson. Williamson passed the song along to Mosses with hopes that he could get someone to record it. Mosses delivered!
Mosses had befriended Brown around 1962 when Johnny Bee was a disc jocky on WACL in Waycross, GA. Brown would call in to Johnny Bee’s show to promote his songs and he discovered Mosses was not only the founder and promoter of one of the largest monthly teen dances in the southeast, but he also brought black entertainers, such as Otis Redding, to Waycross when most promoters were too intimidated to hire and promote black artists. Brown asked Mosses to promote a show for him in Waycross, Johnny Bee agreed and the two became good friends.
When asked to record Dooley’s Junkyard Dogs, Brown not only agreed to do so as a favor to Mosses, but Brown also funded the recording of the song, included it on one of his albums and gave Mosses the publishing rights as a gift. Brown also performed the song live at half time in Sanford Stadium during a visit by Prince Charles, and another time at the Gator Bowl for the “World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party” aka the Georgia-Florida game.
Kirby’s Junkyard Dawgs Executive Producer William Perry has been dreaming of producing an updated version of the song since Kirby Smart became Georgia’s head coach. Perry set his plan in motion when, like many, he was looking for projects during the shelter in place period of the COVID-19 pandemic. It took Perry a while to track down the rightsholder of the song, and when Perry finally connected with Johnny Bee Mosses, now 87 years old, he informed Mosses of his goal to produce the song. Mosses loved the idea, and in the spirit of James Brown’s original recording, Mosses’ Holly Bee Music Company granted permission for William Perry Productions to parody the song.
